Love me a Komeda’s. Thanks for this! Up here in Yamagata, besides the chain stores, cafes always open really late, some places as late as 12pm (!) but usually around 10. Then they stay open until late at night instead. Is this just a Yamagata thing? I’ve always found it odd as it’s the complete opposite to NZ.

Thanks for reading! WOW, midday really! In Kansai, the instagram-like-cafes (the stylish ones with loads of expensive desserts…)open late, but most of the kissaten types open much earlier. My local Komeda opens at 7 am and stays open till 11 PM…never been there that late though. Night time cafe is so convenient, wonder if it’s that way in Yamagata because it’s colder…

Yeah, I hadn’t thought of the cold, but it’s a possibility! A doctor friend here told me that asians in general have a greater tolerance to caffeine, so I assume this means they can drink it at night and still sleep ok. This and the fact that many of them are night owls and clearly not early birds led to the hours. Or at least that was my assumption. There are plenty of older folks here who are definitely not night owls, and I’m certainly in that category too. Sorry, I’m rambling, just something I’ve been thinking about lately!

Oh I see...so many questions! Isn't it fascinating how every little thing can actually raise so many questions and reveal so many insights!?

Thanks for your excellent post. The statistical information was beneficial. I agree that breakfast was so expensive in London, and I gave up stopping at coffee shops when I lived there more than 10 years ago.

Komeda and other Japanese coffee shops are comfortable places for breakfast, but they are not affordable for everyday use.

Those coffee shops have become famous for serving fluffy pancakes with coffee, and I sometimes use them for an early lunch because they now serve mornings until 11:00.

Thank you for your nice comment! I really enjoy the detail of your posts too :D

Yes I agree that it’s not reasonable to go to those coffee shops every day. I try to go on the weekend, or as a special treat!

Early lunch or brunch is a very good idea.
